Reluctant sellers lay ground work for challenge to complete Spanish rural idyll The property, Little Fig, in the province of Alicante, Spain makes a perfect hideaway, a great escape from the rat race, a self-sufficient home or a tranquil holiday retreat and all for just 60.000 euros. The property is virtually a give-away at the going-for-a-song sum of £50.000!
The original house, built at the beginning of the last century, was virtually a ruin. The owners are rebuilding using the original stone. A good deal of the infrastructure is complete, such as an underground water deposit and a septic tank. The installation for the septic tank is in place. The basic ground measurement of the house is approximately 48 square metres (516 sq ft), and a further storey can be built onto the ground floor. That is the plan. Around the property on at least two sides, a wide, open air, rooved terrace, known locally as a naya, is underway. The property’s land measures nearly half an acre. Surrounded by wide and accessible heathland, huge skies, extensive views of the valley and panoramic vistas to the sierra mountains, this is a truly beautiful and peaceful spot. Nearby vegetation is teeming with wildlife, small palms, cacti, prickly pear, wild flowers, fig and carob trees. There are medicinal grasses and shrubs, such as thyme, rosemary, fennel, lavender and wild asparagus creating an aromatic and balmy atmosphere. The plot itself has mature almond and olive trees growing on its terraces.
One of the great
advantages of this rural retreat is situated 400m from the property. A natural,
potable spring where local owners' water rights can
be drawn on all year round. The spring will fill the water deposit, any
swimming pool, jacuzzi or hot tub in the area. The property is not isolated, for nearby is a small community of neighbours. Additionally, 6kms due west is the unspoilt, tiny but busy mountain village of Castell de Castells with its hotels, doctors, chemist, banks, bars and fiestas. The villagers sell 5-litre flagons of virgin olive oil, large tubs of natural honey and loaves of delicious, wood-baked bread. In season, they sell or exchange almonds, fruit and vegetables grown on their land. To top that, they never fail to say: “Buenos dias” when they pass you on the street.
Little Fig,
about 22 miles inland, is a 35-minute drive to the coast. Alicante
and Valencia airports are about one and a half hours’ drive.
