Senija

Senija is a tiny, yet charming village situated in the Marina Alta in the northern part of the province of Alicante. Just 1 km from Benissa it is a stone’s throw from the Mediterranean motorway the A7 and close to all amenties and facilities yet maintains its village character. Its surrounding countryside is expansive and includes undulating areas that take in Penyes Blanques, Cova and Baseta. Excursions to the top of the Baseta, to the Creu Alta or to the Cueva de la Garganta are wonderful spots for unforgettable and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the Mediterranean Sea.

Senija's economy is based upon the local products of wine, olives, carobs and grain. Like neighbouring villages, Senija has been touched by the Arabic and Christian cultures and during the beginning of the 17^th century, Senija was an important Moorish stronghold. Visitors will find a friendly and welcoming people in Senija that have respected and maintained their cultures and traditions over the generations.

Within the village itself the church, built on the site of an ancient mosque, can be visited. The narrow, white-washed streets with their old village houses are typical of the area. But above all, to speak of Senija is to speak of its gastronomic virtues. Senija is an exceptional example of the traditional kitchen in this area. There are several succulent and delicious types of stews prepared with the local, most naturally grown and in-season produce. Senija’s “coques” and “pilotes” must be savoured, its delicious paellas too. Of course, there are also the elaborate sweets and confectionery based upon indigenous fruits, almonds and figs. Senija’s kitchen is rich and varied.

In May, Senija bursts into colour, music and joy as the fiesta to honour la Mare de Deu i Dels Desamparats gets underway. If you blink you may miss Senija, it is advisable not to.
