Llíber
is the smallest and most tranquil village in the region known as the Vall
del Pop. It has just 500 inhabitants. The village is situated between
Senija and Xaló (Jalón) and is only about 15 kms from the beaches and bays
in Benissa. The village is by the Xaló or Gorgos river. The best way to
get there is by taking the N-332 from Benissa or Gata de Gorgos and
following the signs inland to Llíber. The distance to Alicante from Llíber
is 73 km and 46 km to Benidorm.
Traditionally linked to Xaló, which it neighbours and from
which it struck out independently. Llíber is well situated in a fertile
valley called Vall del Pop that reaches from the Sierra de Bernia to the
Sierra del Castell de la Solana.
Llíber’s economy is based on agriculture, mainly oranges,
grapes and almonds. One can
still see the remnants of the time-honoured
tradition of the grape-raisin and harvest drying process from within the
widely visible riu-raus. The riu-raus are attached to most old farmhouses
and they are covered terraces with open access through arched columns,
where the drying process traditionally took place.
Also in Llíber like many of its surrounding villages it
produces the popular valley wines for the Cooperative Virgen Pobre
in Xaló. One of Llíber’s specialities and best known products is its
deliciously sweet and potent Moscatel.
Fiestas are held in the village between the 15 – 19 August
in honour of San Damien. Monument to see: Church of San Cosme and San
Damián. |
